Audio Visual Systems Case Study

QEII Digital Signage

Digital Signage is the latest technology for the dynamic display of information, in the form of electronic displays offering real time information or advertising.  Digital signage is increasingly used in place of traditional media such as posters & brochures as its screen content is dynamic and can be kept up to date virtually without cost.  Many large or multi site organisations take advantage of the ability to easily update content and circulate it to many locations simultaneously.  Digital signage is found in retail outlets, supermarkets, restaurants, banks airports and the gym – it’s even ventured underground and graces escalator walls on the London Underground.

Feltech are one of the market leaders in the full integration of digital signage systems, and were delighted to be chosen by The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, a premier purpose-built venue in Westminster to design and implement a digital signage visitor guidance system. The brief from the QEIICC was for a secure system to provide way-finding around the Centre and add to the technological infrastructure – whilst following the environmental policies of the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

The QEIICC has four main auditoriums, seven conference rooms and over 20 smaller meeting rooms across seven floors and 2000 square metres of exhibition space.  Feltech’s digital signage solution has provided the Centre with a dynamic way of indicating directions to the right room for visitors, guests and exhibitors.

In addition to the way-finding advantages of the system, The QEIICC has the option to benefit from increased revenue streams from the sale of advertising space for clients on the screens.  The whole system is based on a networked solution, run from a central location within The QEIICC and includes remote management of the system from Feltech’s offices.

Feltech implemented a dZine turn key solution for the system and developed a link between The QEIICC's diary system and the new signage software. This enables the Centre to retrieve content from a database automatically, as part of the Centre's event listings.  Feltech supplied, installed and commissioned all the screens required within the budget and timescale of the customer.

On top of its large-scale project management experience, Feltech is known for its position at the forefront of the visual communications industry by embracing the latest technology and techniques.  The QEIICC have 64 displays each with its own graphic processor to allow bespoke content through out the centre.

State-of-the-art technology

In order to satisfy The QEIICC’s stringent requirements Feltech chose a dZine digital signage system for the project.  dZine is a flexible and accessible digital signage tool that supports video and graphics as well as being compatible with common media formats.  With over 75,000 dZine players in operation around the world the system is tried, tested and robust – based on a non-windows platform it is also far less vulnerable to virus attack than many other systems on the market today.

The QEIICC respects a constant commitment to improve performance, especially in relation to environmental issues and Feltech’s dZine digital signage system dramatically reduced the volume of waste paper produced by the venue’s existing static signage system.

Feltech’s Managing Director, Peter Fell said “Digital signage technology reduces costs and increases efficiency in every way.  The QEIICC system is a professional signage interface that enhances way-finding around the Centre, whilst improving speed, effectiveness and the service on offer to clients and staff on a daily basis.”
